Acid Reflux Disease ? Acid Reflux is a condition and not a disease! Unless of course you think in terms of “dis-ease”, meaning “uneasy” or “ill at ease”. It has become way too easy for the medical community to label simple health problems as a diseases, when in fact many of them are just conditions, which in the majority of cases can be corrected without the use of toxic drugs. Reflux in the dictionary is defined as a “backward flow”. However a simple burp or belch would also be classified as reflux and we all know that burping is not a disease. Burping or belching is a natural function of the body, when the stomach pressure gets too high. The pressure in the stomach is always being exerted against the Lower Esophageal Sphincter valve, and when the pressure becomes too great it forces the valve open and we BURP! When food reaches the stomach, it displaces the liquid acidic contents and causes the liquid level in the stomach to rise. This increases the stomach pressure and the pressure being exerted against the Lower Esophageal Sphincter valve forcing it open. Once the valve is forced open the acidic stomach gases which lie above the actual liquid contents, reflux into our esophagus where they build up enough pressure to force the Upper Esophageal Sphincter valve open and the gases come rushing out of our mouth. We call that a burp or a belch. That’s why we usually burp after eating or drinking. There are several different things that can cause an increase in stomach pressure, which in turn leads to reflux. Some of these would be a stomach disorder such as the H.pylori bacterium or a peptic ulcer that will increase stomach pressure and may also cause bloating. Bloating is gas pressure, and we know that too much pressure forces the LES valve open and causes reflux. Being too acidic or having your pH levels on the acidic side will also cause bloating, burping, and you may even experience flatulence more than normal. Anyone who has ever had too much to drink is very familiar with all of these symptoms. Alcohol and the mix you put into it are loaded with sugar and sugar is very acidic. I’m sure you have been around someone in the morning after they have had a night of indulging in alcohol. They complain that they have a hangover, and they are suffering from bloating, burping, flatulence and usually a sore stomach from their night of heavy drinking. There are other things that can increase stomach pressure such as H.pylori bacterium a peptic ulcer or gastritis. Even anger, frustration and stress all contribute to stomach pressure. Another major cause of stomach pressure and reflux is when the bidy is in an acidic state. Meaning that your pH levels have fallen below the desired range of 7.3 to 7.4. Symptoms of being too acidic are burping or belching, stomach bloating and flatulence more than normal. Not only will high acid levels have an effect on your overall health, but they are also a major cause of diseases like cancer or heart disease. In many cases cancer has been completely reversed when people have shifted their pH levels from being too acidic to an alkaline state. Even mild acidity over time can cause health problems like cardiovascular damage, all forms of cancer, diabetes, kidney or gull stones, high blood pressure, Alzheimers, sinusitis, osteoporosis (bone loss) and many other health problems which can be prevented by keeping our bodies in an alkaline state. This simple at home test will determine if you are too acidic, and could save you from many health disorders that acidic people face on a daily basis. CHECKING pH LEVELS You can purchase some Litmus paper at a health food store, and check the acidity of your saliva. You fill your mouth with saliva and then spit into a container such as a cup or glass. Tear off approximately 1" of Litmus paper and then dip one end of it into the saliva, and within a few seconds it will turn color. Then match your test paper up to the color chart on the package that the paper came in and you will see a value or number. Your reading should be around 7.3 to 7.4. Values lower than 7.0 are acidic and should be corrected. Do the test in the morning when your stomach is empty and then again in the evening before you retire and you will have an average reading.
